Every day, we experience the beauty of life. Sometimes, it’s in small ways such as a beloved dog or cat greeting us at the front door. At other times, it's much larger through events like weddings or the birth of a new child.
Life is also full of challenges including moments of grief and loss. Those can sometimes make it harder to see the proverbial rose amongst the bush. First, we want to say that we get it. Celebrating Life can feel difficult when everything around you seems to be going the wrong way.
But second, sometimes all it takes is a shift in our perspective. Today, we want to encourage you to find the beauty of life in everything that’s around you.
Start by keeping a gratitude journal
Sometimes, grief, loss, or hardship can make it challenging to recognize the beauty of life. For example, we may be feeling especially sad. A loved one sees that and gives us an embracing hug. A small gesture, sure, but it can speak volumes later. How exactly?
By recording the action in a gratitude journal. As we spend a great deal of time on our smartphones and tablets, consider using a physical journal. Then later, when you revisit the pages of positivity you’ve written down, it helps to remind you of the small yet amazing things we experience each and every day.
Smile inside of your mind
This is a small tip that might sound a little weird at first, but hear us out. Seeing the beauty that’s all around us sometimes starts with our own minds. Our mindset in any given moment can shape the way we perceive the world.
So, visually picture yourself smiling. Do it right now even! Did you feel a slight shift in your body, almost a sense of peace? Now combine that with something else, perhaps by admiring a perfectly cut lawn or the beautiful blue sky.
Together, these can help you better take in the beauty of life as you experience it day by day.
Find comfort in the small things
For this specific piece of advice, we’re talking to those who have experienced some kind of recent grief or hardship, such as the passing of a loved one or an unexpected job loss. Meditate on a favorite quote or scripture. Go for a walk. Embrace a favorite hobby. Each of those are ways you can see the beauty of life despite your circumstances.
Read a physical book in the great outdoors
As we mentioned, we already spend a ton of time on our screens. One way to find the beauty of life is to leave your phone inside and grab an “old-fashioned” physical book. Take it outside and read it there. Let the sights and the sounds of the great outdoors act as your grounding agent while you read. The tactile approach to holding a book combined with the restorative properties of nature can help you find clarity in the chaos.
