Every day, we have the opportunity to influence other people. From simple acts of kindness to taking the time to help those who are hurting, our legacy is defined by the things we do. The legacy of others works similarly, as everyone from historical leaders to celebrities and everyone in between can have a small yet memorable impact on us. Let’s take a few moments today, to remember the legends that have come before us and the way they’ve made a difference.
Historical figures
At first, this category might seem too broad. After all, the year currently is 2023, and there have been (quite literally) thousands of years of recorded human history to draw from. Where do you even start?
Remembering the legends looks at the legacy that a person left behind. Living in the United States, some of the names that come to mind would be Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Each of them had a major impact on our society and helped to shape the culture in immeasurable ways.
Religious heroes
Each faith has its leaders that helped bring their community together. Some share similar roots, such as the Abrahamic religions that can trace their origins back to Abraham. Others have names that helped shape the direction of their faith, teaching new concepts that would be studied and shared for centuries to come — and continue to do so today.
Pioneers of achievement
Throughout our nation’s history, we’ve accomplished a ton. Remembering the legends also means looking back at those who helped make our country’s mark on the world. Pioneers of flight include the greats such as Katherine Goble Johnson, Amelia Earhart, and Neil Armstrong. Pioneers of technology include individuals such as Steve Jobs and Alexander Graham Bell. And finally, pioneers of medicine include John Hopkins and Elizabeth Blackwell (the first female doctor in America).
Imagine, if you would for a moment, the way each of these pioneers of achievement changed our world.
Teachers and Coaches
Yet, remembering the legends also includes non-family members who had a direct impact on shaping our worldview. Most commonly, those include the various teachers and coaches who helped to educate us, providing us with opportunities to learn and grow during our formative years. As many of these individuals have now passed on, be sure to honor their legacy by sharing how they influenced you — and then go and do the same for others.
Your family members
For most of us, there is no greater hero than a parent or grandparent. Their legacy and influence helped to make us the person we are today. Honoring them helps us fully embrace the lessons they taught us. We call this process “Remembering the Legends”, and there are many different ways of preserving the memory of your loved ones.
