Do you have a hobby that defines you? Or do you have a particular style, such as always wearing T-shirts with puns on them? Perhaps you love flowers so much that they’re almost synonymous with you as a person. Each of these demonstrates the importance of personalization during a Celebration of Life service.
No two individuals are exactly alike. What works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. Some people lead a relatively formal life, while others prefer a more laid-back approach. The way we honor our loved ones is another component of this process and why we believe so strongly in the importance of personalization during these celebrations.
Today, we will dial in on one of the ways we try to make each service unique by providing a few examples of highly personalized experiences.
Sports
As we’re only an hour away from Columbus, we recognize the Ohio State Buckeyes' impact on this region. However, they’re not the only Central Ohio sports team; many of our loved ones root for the Blue Jackets, Crew, and Clippers.
However, collegiate and professional sports aren’t the only options. Themed celebrations that recognize your connection with a local high school sports program, a love for an out-of-market team, or an international club are a small sampling of the possibilities to consider.
Seeds
Are you or your loved one a huge fan of flowers? One possibility is to include a packet of seeds with the In Memoriam card. This is a small but subtle way of continuing a love of botany among those who participated in the services.
Favorite Foods
We’re not going to spend a ton of time here other than to highlight that the importance of personalization can extend to include incorporating favorite foods. If an individual was a big fan of baking cookies, perhaps consider putting their favorite recipe within the In Memoriam card. This encourages others to continue their traditions.
Hobbies
There are almost as many hobbies as there are people. Common hobbies include athletics, music, dancing, painting, and gardening. Hobbies can also include less common ideas, such as scale model kit building or collecting miniature trains. Including these as a part of the celebration reflects the individual's personality and helps remind others of their legacy.
Music
The last possibility we’re going to highlight today is music. Music at a Celebration of Life service can take on many forms. One is to use a playlist of the individual’s favorite artists or songs. Another is live music, such as a musically gifted family member singing a favorite song or two.
The Importance of Personalization & Pre-Planning
Our list above is woefully incomplete, as you can personalize a Celebration of Life memorial in many ways. We chose these because they cover many possibilities. However, the options are relatively endless. Our team can help you unpack the type of personalization you want to see for you or your loved one and will do so with the grace and compassion our community has come to expect from Jackson Lytle & Lewis.
