In January, many Americans choose to Celebrate Life by making a New Year's resolution to exercise more. Why? Because going to the gym with friends, taking a fitness class with your partner, or running a 5K for a cause you believe in
are all excellent ways to cultivate a beautiful life.
If getting in shape for 2024 is on your radar, there are several things to consider before starting a new exercise routine. Here are our top five things to remember to make your resolution successful.
1. Always consult with your primary care physician first.
Before starting a new exercise routine, training for a half-marathon, etc., we highly encourage you to schedule a doctor's appointment. They can clear you for whatever plan you're following, ensuring that your body can handle whatever you throw its way.
2. Take some Before photos and measurements.
Did you know that muscle weighs more than fat? If your goal is to lose weight, you might not see the scale go down based on the type of new exercise routine that you start. Your body will look and feel different, but the scale might not change much. You may even gain weight!
That’s why photos and measurements are so vitally important. Eventually, the scale will change. But until it does, a visual record of where you started can motivate you to keep pushing forward.
3. Set realistic goals.
Your new exercise routine goals should be practical and doable. Let’s look at this from a pure numbers perspective. If you want to lose twenty-five pounds, it will take longer to lose that weight than it took to gain it. Don’t set yourself up for failure by aiming too high. Instead of aiming to lose twenty-five pounds, start with five or ten. Once you meet your first goal, set another small goal, then another one, and so on. These smaller steps are much more encouraging, especially as you hit them throughout the year.
4. Ease into your new routine.
Another thing to keep in mind is pacing. If you haven’t done any workout in over a decade, it will take a while to ease yourself back into it. Starting a new exercise routine can be fun. But it can also be challenging. If you pace yourself, you're more likely to achieve the results you want.
5. Take a break when needed.
Did you work your body particularly hard yesterday? Don’t be afraid to take a break. An excellent place to start is three times per week. This method builds four rest days into your schedule and lets you acclimate to your new exercise routine.
What Exercise Does for Your Quality of Life
How does exercise help you Celebrate Life? Exercise works wonders for your mental health. When you exercise consistently, your brain releases endorphins, dopamine, and other chemicals that help you feel better. Moving your body enables your mind to savor good experiences and healthily cope with bad ones. Whatever your plans are for the next few months, we hope 2024 is your best year yet!
