Robert L. Burton, age 86, of Springfield, passed away at home on Monday, May 24, 2021. He was born on April 2nd, 1935 in Springfield, OH to parents, Robert L. Burton Sr. and Mary Wilson Burton. In addition to his parents, Bob, as he is more affectionately known, was preceded in death (2003) by his brother, Ronald Burton of Framingham, MA, whose wife JoAnn, and children, Ron Jr., Stephen, Philip, Elizabeth, and Paul, survive him. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 28 years, Doris Clement Burton; sons Bruce (Tanya) and Bryant Burton; grandchildren, Nikko, Nile, and Bryant, Jr., as well as Doris' children and five grandchildren. Additionally, he leaves devoted cousins, Delores Berrien, Kenna Davis, and Natella Tyler of Springfield, and many other loved ones he cherished.
Bob graduated from Central State University with a B.S. in accounting and a Master's degree in public administration from Central Michigan University. Bob served as a Captain in the Ohio National Guard for ten years, retiring as a CPA and also a professor of accounting at Clark State Community College. He operated his own accounting firm for many years. He was the former Mayor of Springfield and remained very involved in community boards and foundations throughout the years - specifically as a co-founder of the African American Community Fund, AACF, of the Springfield Foundation. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
He will be laid to rest at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the African American Community Fund in Bob’s honor. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.jacksonlytle.com
