In Loving Memory of Mary Gail Simpson

January 3, 1938 – December 27, 2024

Mary Gail Simpson, a beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and pillar of her community, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, service, and love. Born on January 3, 1938, in Clayton, Alabama, Mary Gail’s life was defined by her deep commitment to family, her passion for helping others, and her dedication to uplifting her community.

Mary Gail's journey brought her to the Miami Valley by way of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, where she pursued her love for social welfare and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. It was at Wilberforce that she met her husband, William (Bill) Simpson, an industrial engineering student. Their love story blossomed, and they married on Christmas Day in 1965. Together, they built a life filled with love and purpose, raising two sons, William “Hewitt” and Alston, in their cherished home on Omar Circle in Yellow Springs.

In 1978, Mary Gail earned a Master of Science in counseling education from the University of Dayton, further equipping her for a remarkable career in social work. She dedicated herself to Montgomery County’s Job and Family Services department before serving as an adoption and foster care supervisor with the Greene County Children’s Services Board in Xenia. Her life's work revolved around reuniting children with their families or finding them loving adoptive homes. She was known for her tireless advocacy and profound ability to bring hope to children and families during their most challenging times.

Mary Gail retired in 1999, but her heart for service never waned. She devoted her retirement to volunteering at the Glen Helen Nature Shop, playing Bridge with cherished friends, and nurturing her garden filled with flowers, herbs, and vegetables—when local deer allowed it.

A proud life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Mary Gail’s commitment to service extended through her involvement with the Wilberforce Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the women’s service organization, Altrusa International. She worked tirelessly to raise funds for scholarships and support children in need by raising funds for clothing items for Children’s Services. A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Yellow Springs, Mary Gail was a regular participant in the church’s Annual Tea, exemplifying her faith and dedication to her spiritual community.

In 2021, Mary Gail was inducted into the Greene County Women’s Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to her lifetime of service, volunteerism, and leadership.

Mary Gail was preceded in death by her loving husband, William B. Simpson; her parents, Austin and Inesta Farrior; and her sisters, Rev. Dr. Bennie F. Maddox and Catherine F. Johnson. She leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her memory: her sons, William H. Simpson (Natombi L. Simpson) and Alston Y. Simpson; her grandchildren, Alexis Williams, and William C. Simpson; her brother-in-law, Rev. Dr. John Earl Maddox; and host of nieces, nephews, and friends who were touched by her love and warmth.

Mary Gail's life was a testament to the power of love, grace, and service. Her light will continue to shine in the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.

Rest in peace, Mary Gail. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of those you touched.
