James Harold Cousins, 82, passed away on March 2, 2025, in Kettering, Ohio.

Born on September 21, 1942, in Fullerton, California, Jim grew up with a deep curiosity about the world and a drive to make a difference. He attended Anaheim High School before earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles. UCLA provided him with not only a rigorous academic challenge but also a front-row seat to the defining political and social movements of the 1960s. His passion for political science was matched only by his enduring enthusiasm for UCLA football, a loyalty he carried throughout his life.

Teaching was always a presence in Jim’s life. While pursuing his master’s degree, he began his career at John F. Kennedy High School as both an educator and an assistant coach for the school's water polo team. However, his path soon led beyond California when he became involved in political campaigns. His dedication and keen organizational skills propelled him into a role as an administrative assistant—eventually leading the entire staff—for Representatives Richard Hanna and Jerry Patterson. His time in Washington, D.C., allowed him to witness history firsthand while shaping policy behind the scenes.

Jim later transitioned into lobbying "Swamp" work, representing credit unions and savings and loan institutions before ultimately serving as an executive with the Indiana Bankers Association. His leadership in the financial sector reflected his commitment to fostering economic stability and growth.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim had a lifelong love for model trains. Before retiring, he always kept a table of them running—a testament to his meticulous nature and appreciation for craftsmanship. Each Christmas, setting up the train under the tree became a cherished family tradition. He also had a deep appreciation for classic Western films, particularly those featuring John Wayne and Gary Cooper. As he grew older, his love for Westerns evolved into an active hobby—cowboy action shooting—where he could immerse himself even further in the spirit of the Old West.

Jim’s faith was an essential part of his life. Raised in the United Methodist Church, he spent much of his youth volunteering at church camps as a lifeguard and counselor. As an adult, he approached his faith with the same intellectual rigor that he applied to political science—always seeking deeper understanding while holding steadfast to the belief that God’s Word is rooted in love for all people, especially those most in need.

Above all else, Jim was devoted to his family. His kindness, intelligence, and unwavering support were constants in their lives. Even in difficult times, his first concern was always the well-being of his wife and son. He possessed a rare perspective on life—one that he generously shared with those around him, particularly his students and colleagues.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Demuth Cousins, and his son, James Martin Cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chas. Harold Cousins and Lucile Jimsetta (Martin) Cousins.

His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched—as an educator, mentor, advocate, and friend. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
