George W. Smith, age 77, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 28, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio. He was born on January 25, 1948, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to the late Edward C. and Eleanor I. (Ingold) Smith.
A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, George served valiantly in two combat tours in Vietnam from 1965 to 1969. His sense of duty and commitment to his country was a cornerstone of his character, earning him the respect and admiration of those around him.
The oldest of four boys, George took great pride in beating his brothers regularly on the links and was “by par” the best golfer in the family.
His other hobbies included painting, winning at Scrabble against his daughter, son-in-law and grandson, refurbishing El Camino’s to almost “street legal” condition and watching his favorite sports teams, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers.
He lived his life the way anyone would admire; giving what he could to anyone in need. He loved spending time volunteering at the Springfield Jail and Dayton VA hospital holding Bible Study classes. George’s heart for helping his family, friends and all others was immeasurable.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter, Heather (Joseph) Nicholls; his brothers, Daniel Smith and Randall (Nondy) Smith; and his grandson, Aaron Barnett. George was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Smith.
Visitation will be held on April 3, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00 PM at Jackson Lytle and Lewis Life Celebration Center with Pastor Kirk Ross officiating. George will be laid to rest privately at Ferncliff Cemetery.
