Donald Mathews, age 92, passed away on March 24, 2021 in Springfield, Ohio. Don was born on November 9, 1928 to the late Cal and Virginia (Robinson) Mathews in Kenova, West Virginia. Along with his parents, Donald is preceded in death by his spouse of almost 56 years, Helen (Barbour) Mathews, brothers; Lowell Mathews, George Lawson Mathews, Albert Mathews, and Paul Mathews, and sisters; Marguerite Rose, Thelma Helton, and Martha Mathews. He is survived by his sons; Rick Mathews and Dwaine (Kelley) Mathews, daughter, Linda Witter, companion and caregiver of 9 years, Shirley Ballantine, brothers; Russ Mathews and Cal Homer Mathews, sister, Hazel Conley, grandchildren; Jamie Chell, Logan Mathews, Ashley DuGan, Elizabeth Zerby, and Elysa Trick, great-grandchildren; AJ, Parker, Charlie, Karlie, Karsin, Cooper, Mac, Lilly, Jack, Maddie, Kinsley, and Kolbie, and numerous nieces and nephews. In his freetime, Don liked traveling and RVing. He was a snowbird, spending his time down in the sun in Florida. He was a man of strong faith and was devoted to his family. He selflessly served our country during the Korean War in the United States Army. He also retired from Navistar in 1987. Donald will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Family and friends will be accepted on Thursday, April 1, 2021 from 10:00-12:00 PM at Jackson Lytle and Lewis Life Celebration Center, Springfield. A service will follow at 12:00 PM, officiated by Pastor Clayton Brooks. Donald will be entombed next to his spouse, Helen, at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Donald’s honor. Condolences may be expressed to the family by visiting www.jacksonlytle.com.
